Welcome to my kitchen! In this video, I’ll show you how to make delicious homemade applesauce and then freeze dry it for long-term storage.
Instructions:
Prepare the Apples:
Start by washing the apples thoroughly.
Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces. You can leave the skins on if you prefer a chunkier texture.
Cook the Apples:
Place the chopped apples in a large pot.
Add water to the pot to prevent the apples from sticking to the bottom.
Simmer the Apples:
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot.
Let the apples simmer for about 20-30 minutes, or until they are soft and easily mashed with a fork.
Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
Mash the Apples:
Once the apples are soft, use a potato masher, immersion blender, or regular blender to mash the cooked apples to your desired consistency.
For a chunky applesauce, mash the apples with a potato masher or fork.
For a smoother applesauce, use an immersion blender or regular blender.
Cool the Applesauce:
Let the applesauce completely cool before filling your freeze dryer trays
Freeze Dry your Applesauce:
Spread your applesauce evenly onto your freeze dryer trays - using the silicone mats will help with easy clean up
(Optional) Pre-Freeze your trays - this will help cut down on processing time
Load your freeze dryer and follow the on screen instructions.
Check the Applesauce: After the freeze drying cycle is complete, check the applesauce to make sure it is completely dry. It should be light, crispy, and break apart easily. If there are any soft spots, you may need to run the machine for a few more hours.
Store the Freeze-Dried Applesauce: Once fully dried, store the freeze-dried applesauce in airtight containers, such as Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, to keep it fresh for long-term storage.
Enjoy your freeze-dried applesauce as a healthy snack, or rehydrate it with a bit of water to enjoy as applesauce again. Happy freeze drying! 🍏
